The Principles of Psychology
The 1890 book that made psychology an empirical science in America, and still the best-written thing the field has produced: the chapters on habit, the stream of thought and the self are as alive as anything published since, and the chapter on the emotions launched the James–Lange theory. It runs to some 1,300 pages, but it rewards dipping in anywhere.
