A mathematical proof that took 30 years, a video that makes neural networks visible, and a surprisingly compelling argument against small coins.

The proof

Quanta Magazine published a feature on the geometric Langlands conjecture — nine mathematicians, 800 pages, 30 years of work. The conjecture connects number theory, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics in ways that most mathematicians can only partially understand. Erica Klarreich does a remarkable job making the scope of the achievement legible: this isn't a single result but a proof that an entire mathematical framework is internally consistent. The analogy she uses — it's like proving that a map of a continent is accurate by walking every road — isn't perfect, but it conveys the exhaustiveness of what these nine people accomplished.

Seeing attention

Grant Sanderson's video on attention in transformers does for LLMs what his linear algebra series did for vectors: it makes the invisible visible. The attention mechanism — how transformer models decide which words in a sentence should influence the interpretation of other words — is one of the most important ideas in modern AI, and most explanations of it are either too simple or too technical. Sanderson lands in the exact right place. The moment where he visualizes how the word "bank" shifts meaning depending on whether "river" or "money" appears nearby is the kind of insight that changes how you think about language itself.

Death to nickels

CGP Grey returned with Death to Nickels, a follow-up to his classic "Death to Pennies" video. The argument: the US nickel costs more to manufacture than it's worth, costing taxpayers ~$135 million annually. Grey's signature move — taking a subject nobody thinks about and making it feel urgent through sheer force of logic and animation — works perfectly here. It's a ten-minute video about monetary policy that's more entertaining than it has any right to be.

What they share: each one takes something that seems either impossibly complex or too trivial to matter, and reveals the hidden structure underneath.
