How to Solve It

by George Pólya

Pólya's field manual for problems you've never seen before: understand the problem, devise a plan, carry it out, look back. After that comes a short dictionary of heuristics (work backwards, solve a simpler related problem, draw a figure, use all the data) that applies far beyond geometry. Nearly every later book on problem-solving builds on this one.
