Three videos this week that each, in completely different ways, show what happens when you measure carefully.

Measuring the heavens

Grant Sanderson (3Blue1Brown) did something unprecedented: he sat down with Terence Tao — arguably the greatest living mathematician — for an unscripted conversation about the cosmic distance ladder. The premise is deceptively simple: how did humanity figure out how far away things are? Starting with Eratosthenes measuring the Earth with shadows, they trace the chain of measurements that eventually reached the stars. Tao's corrections and asides are the best part — watching a Fields medalist think out loud about the history of his own discipline is rare and riveting.

Sanderson also released a video on higher-dimensional geometry that starts with simple puzzles and ends with the unsettling realization that thinking in four dimensions isn't just useful — it's sometimes the only way to solve problems that look impossible in three.

The forever chemicals

Veritasium published a nearly hour-long investigation into PFAS contamination — the "forever chemicals" that one company knew were toxic and hid the evidence for decades. Derek Muller tests his own blood and finds elevated levels. The video won the 2025 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Gold Award, and it earned it: this is investigative journalism that happens to be a YouTube video. The section where Muller walks through internal company documents is genuinely enraging.

Is gravity random?

PBS Space Time released an episode asking whether gravity might be random rather than quantum — exploring Jonathan Oppenheim's postquantum gravity hypothesis. The idea: maybe gravity doesn't need to be quantized to be compatible with quantum mechanics. Maybe it's fundamentally stochastic. The episode handles genuinely cutting-edge theoretical physics without dumbing it down or making it inaccessible.

The pattern

Eratosthenes measured the Earth with a stick and a shadow. PFAS researchers measured chemicals in blood. Physicists are trying to measure gravity at the quantum scale. The method is the same across millennia: look carefully, measure precisely, and be willing to accept what the data says.
